This is kind of old news, but I don't ever remember this being posted on here, and I thought it would be interesting to get some people's take on it just because Prince and Purple Rain are so iconic.
Apparently Prince originally sent "Purple Rain" to Stevie Nicks to write lyrics for him but she turned him down,
Quote:
Nicks became friends with Prince after he played synthesizers on her 1983 single 'Stand Back' – a song that was inspired by his own track 'Little Red Corvette'. In an interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, she claimed that after asking Prince if they could collaborate again in the future, he had sent her cassette tape featuring a 10-minute instrumental version of 'Purple Rain' and asked her to write lyrics for it. She said: Quote: It was so overwhelming, that 10-minute track… I listened to it and I just got scared. I called him back and sad, 'I can't do it. I wish I could. It's too much for me. | However, the singer was adamant that she didn't regret her decision to not accept his invitation, adding: "I'm so glad I didn't, because he wrote it, and it became 'Purple Rain'." |
Source What do you think it would have sounded like if Stevie had done the lyrics? Just interesting to think about.
