The club's managing director and former Chelsea Director of Football Frank Arnesen pledged his support to Van der Vaart. He told Bild.de: 'We will support Rafa, protect him and give him time. He loves football, which will help him. He is a strong character. 'He will bring a high level of performance. I'm there for him when he needs me.' On the New Year's Eve incident, Van der Vaart said: 'It was very foolish of me. I'm an idiot. I'm very sorry. It should never have happened.'
