News: No Frenzy for iPad Mini

Apple’s scaled-down iPad mini debuted to scaled-down crowds Friday morning — a much quieter launch than Apple products normally receive. The size of the crowds that line up — or camp out — for the launch of a new Apple products can often be a good indicator of how excited the company’s core fans are about the latest gadget.

Reports on Twitter indicated crowds at Washington-area stores were even smaller. A much-retweeted message from NBC4 reporter Tony Tull showed a just one man standing in line at the Georgetown store at 5 a.m. A 6 a.m. tweet from Georgetown from ABC7 anchor Steve Chenevey said a total of five people had gathered.

The Friday launch of the iPad mini was met with the usual lines and sold out pre-orders. But compared to launches of past iPads and iPhones, the excitement surrounding the new product debut was a bit more lackluster than expected.

iPad mini buyer Inna Treyger visited the downtown San Francisco store around 8:45 AM Pacific time and was surprised by the lack of line — there wasn’t a single person outside at the store that is generally the scene of massive launch-day crowds. “I’ve never personally waited in line at a launch before,” Treyger said. “But I’ve walked by iPhone launch lines in the past, so I know how crazy the process can get. I was in and out in seven minutes.”

Why the lower numbers? Many people I’ve talked to just don’t understand what the mini is for or why they would need one, especially if they already own both an iPhone and an iPad.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) released the long-awaited iPad Mini Friday morning, but instead of inspiring a large crowd of techies to wait in line all night, the company could barely muster a crowd of 20 people. In fact, at 6:55 a.m. EDT this morning, one Apple Store in Metro Detroit had just 13 people waiting to buy the iPad Mini and two waiting for the fourth-generation iPad.
"I just got the [iPad] 3 a couple weeks ago," said Jennifer Novak, the first person in line. "I of course said, 'They probably won't come out with anything new.' And they did, so they let me return [the iPad 3]. Since I'm going to have it for a while, I figured I might as well get in line for the 4."

Despite his enthusiasm, Long did not expect a larger crowd this morning. "I didn't think anybody would want [the iPad Mini] and anybody that I asked that actually had iPads and iPhones didn't want it," he said.

"I thought there'd be like 7,000 people here this morning, but there's like 15," Amin added. "And it's not even raining or snowing outside, so there's no reason for them not to be here. Seriously, the iPhone 5 was crazy. I couldn't keep my seat because people were like, 'Hey, I want to get in front of you.'"

Reuters reports that queues for the iPad Mini were well down on previous launches at Apple stores in Australia and Asia. Only around 50 people waited at the Apple Store in Sydney for the new product, when lines had stretched back several blocks for debuts of new iPhone models.

More than 100 people greeted the iPad Mini at Apple Stores in Tokyo and Seoul, but Reuters notes that when sales started at Apple's flagship Hong Kong store "staff appeared to outnumber those waiting in line". The iPad Mini will compete with Google's Asus-made Nexus 7, along with Amazon's Kindle Fire HD and other rival tablets from Samsung and Barnes & Noble.
