Liam, 19, had two nights out with the 27-year-old Bleeding Love singer in London last week, the Sunday Mirror can reveal.
And a source close to the teen star said it could mark the start of a “blossoming romance” despite the eight-year age gap.
Leona, described by smitten Liam as “beautiful” in an *interview last year, is a dead ringer for his ex Danielle Peazer.
He broke up with the 24-year-old X Factor dancer a fortnight ago *before confirming the end of their two-year relationship last week.
Meanwhile, former X Factor winner Leona has also split from her *German lover Dennis Jauch, 23, after two years together.
A source close to Liam said: “He is *really excited about how things are going with Leona.
“As soon as the chance came to ask her out he grabbed it – and they really enjoyed their dates together.
“Although they were in London they managed to stay out of the limelight and are really into each other.”
Liam told how Leona was his celebrity crush in an interview last September. “She is beautiful. I have liked her ever since she did the X Factor all of those years ago,” he said.
A family source told us: “Liam has never made any secret of his feelings for Leona. It hardly went down well last year with Danielle when he practically admitted he had a crush on her.
“Then earlier this summer Leona told how she enjoyed giving Liam advice about his career. It was all harmless fun at the time. But now Liam seems to have moved on to Leona.
“He is not at all bothered about the eight-year age gap.”
In May, Leona revealed she loved spending time with One Direction, describing them as, “mad boys”.
She added: “They’re having a lot of fun. I give them a little bit of advice sometimes. I tell them to enjoy it.”
At the time she was with dancer Dennis and seemed to dismiss any chance of a romance with Liam because of his age. “He’s sweet, but they’re, like, two,” she said.
But Leona’s relationship with Dennis has cooled in recent months and the pair have not been seen out together since the early summer.
In contrast, Liam’s relationship with Danielle, 24, of Enfield, North London, seemed more secure. In August he was with her at London’s Funky Buddha club for his 19th birthday.
But a source told the Sunday Mirror that Liam’s worldwide fame had caused increasing strain in the romance.
“Liam has jetted around the world with girls lusting after him,” said the insider. “While he was never unfaithful, it was hard for Danielle to cope.
“She would have loved to have seen more of Liam, but his career had to come first. It’s sad they’ve had to part. But you could understand why a woman like Leona Lewis would be able to cope with Liam’s superstar status.”
Wolverhampton lad Liam has ammassed a personal fortune of around £20million as part of five-strong 1D.
And Hackney-born Leona has also made millions since winning X Factor in 2006. She has sold over 20 million records worldwide and releases a new album, Glassheart, next month.
