Discussion: Is 2012 the year of broken relationships?
Sep 3rd 2012, 20:54

But there's a side of you that I never knew, never knew, all the things you said, they were never true, never true

If you ever leave me, baby, leave some morphine at my door

You know the bed feels warmer, sleeping here alone

We found love in a hopeless place

My seat's been taken by some sunglasses, askin' bout a scar, and I know I gave it to you months ago, I know you're trying to forget

You chewed me up and spit me out, like I was poison in your mouth

Told myself that you were right for me, but felt so lonely in your company

Gravity hurts, you made it so sweet, till I woke up on the concrete

If happy ever after did exist, I would still be holding you like this

Which way is right, which way is wrong, how can I say that we need to move on, you know we're headed separate ways

I broke it off thinking you'd be crying, now I feel like sh** looking at you flying

You and I get so damn dysfunctional we start keeping score

I remember when we broke up the first time, saying this is it, I've had enough

I won't miss all of the fighting that we always did, take it in, I mean what I say when I say there is nothing left

You said it's meant to bet, that it's not you, it's me, you're leaving now for my own good

Has anyone else noticed this pattern? Broken/ damaged relationships seem to be a recurring theme among this year's biggest hit songs. Now, obviously, not ALL of this year's hits have been about that, but it's pretty interesting to note how many of them have been.

Now, we can't have this discussion without bringing up 21, a bitter breakup album that topped both this year's and last year's sales charts. Is it because of Adele's massive commercial success that breakup songs are so popular right now, or is it the other way around; that is, Adele's success has been made possible by the fact that breakup songs are en vogue?

What do you think?
