You see, although Madonna and (to a lesser degree) Janet was very popular in the old days, they weren't able to connect to the younger audience. They needed a superstar with the middle american background, charm, charisma, beauty (:smitten:) and relevance in order to connect w/ and bridge that gap. That man was Justin Timberlake.
After seeing the ginormous success his Sophomore (FutureSex/LoveSounds) attracted, Madonna (as per usual) reached out to the most popular artist on the planet and collaborated with him, and Timbaland. The track was a success and was Madge's biggest WW hit in over a decade, a hit she has not been able to top yet. :(. Nevertheless, it was JT's attraction to the public that gave Madge that edge and allowed the younger generation to find out more about "that bird mum and dad raved too".
Janet unfortunately was a different story. She had to grow up in her brother's shadow and eventually managed to break out of his shell in the middle 90s. Her appearance with JT at the Superbowl was meant to be HER crowning moment. The day SHE was able to carve out her own legendary status was cut short when THAT happened :shakeno:. Alas, her legacy was somewhat diminished by that spectacle and while her camp continued to pour scorn over Justin and belittle his achievements, JT went from strength to strength racking up Grammy, acclaim, money and legend status.
The effect JT has had on the careers both artists is extraordinary, single-handedly sculpting them from the ashes. Bravo King :)
