The nation awoke to the tragic news that Princess Diana was dead.
It was 15 years ago today Princess Diana died following a car crash in Paris.
She died in a car crash in the tunnel while her driver was trying to evade motorcycle-riding paparazzi.
The world reacted in shock, and the outpouring of love and grief continues to this day.
Death 'Queen of Hearts', known for charity work, beauty and impeccable taste and style, touched the whole world.
She was one of the icons of the 20th century, helping to define a generation of British royalty. Although she was aged just 19 when she became engaged to the Prince of Wales, and was a Princess for just 16 years, Diana transformed the ancient institution into which she married.
She left behind two sons and a brilliant philanthropic legacy still celebrated today.
Hundreds of Britons and visitors are expected to commemorate the anniversary of her death by paying their respects at her former home, Kensington Palace.
