Discussion: The impact of internet/social media - Not fully realized? Dec 1st 2012, 06:42 I feel like people often trivialize the impact and role of social media + the Internet. I don't think social media is anywhere near its peak in terms of user base or impact and the Internet is still in its growing, infantile stages but have you been able to see how impactful these things are to people? Like I don't think that when William Hewlett and Dave Packard founded HP, they'd think down the line that computers would be a hub for communication between 2 people's thousands of miles away from one another or that there'd be a form of media on computers where people communicate and share their thoughts on things. Or where news could travel faster than radios or TV (IE: the news of Osama bin Laden's death). As you see countries like Syria blocking the Internet and others censoring it heavily, you can really scope out the power of it. The world has never been this interconnected ever. It's crazy how in my own experiences I've been able to see so many people's backstories and seek the truth on things. Before, everybody just used to watch the news or listen to it. If they're lying to you, how do you know? Things like fact checkers or Snopes give truth to things and expose the spread of misinformation or myths. Things like that have never been possible really for the masses. I think this is gonna be really shown as world tensions rise and we possibly go into WW3 down the line. We've never had an extremely major war with social media especially ones where major developed countries are being attacked. I think it'll be insane to see people tweet/share pictures of air strikes occurring in their city or videos of their home being invaded. It also brings up the question on if the Internet may see its first shutdown in countries who don't participate in major censorship in fear of cyber attacks (the president does have the power to shut down the Internet in case of emergency btw). Do you realize the importance of social media and the Internet? Do you think their roles are wrongly undermined? How do you think the world will use both of these things in the future?

Nov 30th 2012, 13:32 Back in 2010, Rihanna was owning radio, single sales and even album sales for Loud (and Rated R at the first half of that year), the so called fans of the trinity warned navy that their faves will come and slay at 2011. The result is Adele slayed everybody, Rih comes second. Gaga comes..... third. Both Bey and Brit underperformed. And Katy just made historic feats. Now in 2012, we just witnessed Rihanna geting her 1st #1 album in the US, Adele still slaying with those album sales, and Taylor Swift getting those checks. Come 2013, Bey and Gaga will release their 5th and 3rd studio albums respectively. Jsut so you know, both artists have already lined up promotional stunts and hyping for their upcoming projects. Now, are you excited for the competition next year? I mean, who will possibly own the year? Should we expect Unapologetic to be another LOUD? Will there be a new ADELE? Will Lady Gaga finally lived up to her hype? Will Beyonce repeak this time? Will Katy give us 6 number ones from an album? Will Kesha slay us all with millions of album sales? Me, I'm excited to see how next year's music industry will pan out. I just hope for the best of them all. Discuss :coffee2:

Chart Listings: No Doubt Sell Just 680 Copies Of 'Looking Hot' Nov 30th 2012, 14:15 Quote: No Doubt's latest single 'Looking Hot' has well and truly bombed, having sold just 680 copies in its first week of release in the UK. The second single to be taken the band's comeback album Push and Shove reached No 397 on the singles chart, some 1,500 copies short of breaking into the Top 200, reports NME.com. It's an odd result, given the relative popularity of singer Gwen Stefani and the group's recent performance on X Factor, which usually lifts an artist's sales by around 300 per cent. The album peaked at No.16 in the chart, selling less than 7,000 copies while first single Settle Down reached No.85. Essentially, it's been a disastrous comeback for the group, who were criticised for their video for Looking Hot, which depicted Gwen Stefani as a Native American squaw dancing in a tepee. The band apologised for any offence and pulled the clip. It could go towards explaining the single's poor performance, and Last.FM say 28,000 people have "scrobbled" the song, which has clocked 117,000 plays. It's likely that fans are playing the songs on streaming services such as Spotify, rather than downloading and listening on iTunes. Though the band has made its millions over the years, its recent chart performance will disappoint Stefani and company.
